WHEREAS, the Columbia River Gorge is a unique geological area deserving of protection from unwise development; and
WHEREAS, the multitude of city, county, state and federal jurisdictions involved in the current management of the area often cannot agree, and fail to provide any assurance as to how the area will be managed in the future; and
WHEREAS, there have been several efforts by developers in recent months to subdivide property on both sides of the Columbia River in the gorge area; and
WHEREAS, Senators Packwood and Hatfield and Congressmen AuCoin, Weaver and Wyden have introduced bills which provide adequate management safeguards, establish a Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area and place the area under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service and a regional commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the National Wildlife Federation, in annual meeting assembled March 17-20, 1983, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, hereby endorses and actively supports federal legislation to establish the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area.
