Background

State Wildlife Action Plans are strategic documents developed by each U.S. state and territory to conserve fish and wildlife and the habitats they rely on before they become endangered. These plans identify species of greatest conservation need, assess the health of habitats, highlight key threats, and outline conservation strategies that account for community needs. Updated every ten years, these plans are also required for states to receive funding through the federal State Wildlife Grants program.

Colorado’s updated State Wildlife Action Plan provides a comprehensive strategy to conserve hundreds of species of fish, wildlife and plants. It will guide Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s work for the next decade and provides a platform for proactive, science-based conservation and collaboration among government agencies, conservation organizations, and the public. Successful implementation of this plan will keep hundreds of species from becoming more rare and costly to conserve and will help protect Colorado’s outdoor heritage.
